SMS Â Double-Ended #9 Molt Periosteal Elevator is an oral instrument commonly used to retract soft tissue in dental procedures. It has a sharp, pointed, narrow end that is used to begin the process of lifting the mucoperiosteum and a slightly wider, more rounded end that completes the tissue removal enough for bone exposure. Both tips are thin and slightly curved. The #9 Molt periosteal elevator is one of the most commonly used instruments in oral surgery.

PERIOSTEAL Elevators:
SMS Periosteal Elevators are heavy metal instruments, with a broad, flat thin end for prising between periosteum and bone and lifting theperiosteum prior to working on the bone. Periosteal Elevators are mainly used to lift full thickness soft tissue flaps. The tips require protection and need to be kept very sharp otherwise shredding of the flap can happen. Periosteal Elevators are primarily used to retract gingival tissue and are ideal for complex extractions in which an incision must be made.
