Dental Instruments
SMS Instrument Fergusson – Ackland mouth gag was originally designed by William Fergusson, a British surgeon, in 1876. The grooved jaws designed to fit against the teeth of this mouth gag were added by William Robert Ackland, a British dentist. This type of mouth gag is still used today. Mouth gags are used to keep a patient’s mouth open during surgery. If anesthetics are given through a tube placed down the windpipe (trachea), it is important that the patient does not bite down on the tube and stop the flow of anesthetic. The gag may also have been used to keep the mouth open during surgery, for example when tonsils were being removed.

Mouth Gags
Mouth gags are surgical devices placed between the upper and the lower jaw to prevent the mouth from closing during operative procedures of the mouth or throat. Since the beginning of the use of mouth gags in medicine, a wide variety of different models has been invented and described. Till now, slipping, sliding and dislocation in the mouth are problems observed during use, especially of one-sided mouth gags. Mouth gags are devices used to hold the patient’s mouth open when working in the oral cavity, or to force the mouth open when it cannot open naturally because of forward dislocation of the jaw joint’s intra articular cartilage pad.
A mouth gag can assist in keeping a patient’s mouth open if he has been sedated for painful dental work or surgery. It can also help patients who have difficulty keeping their mouth open for other reasons. When placed in the mouth, the mouth gag keeps the teeth apart while still allowing for a surgeon or dentist to work inside. They are used in dentistry and surgery in order to hold a patient’s mouth open. A mouth gag may also be used in adult erotic play. Dental mouth gags are usually made of stainless steel so that they can be easily cleaned and sterilized. Some other kinds of mouth gags resemble a pair of pliers, which can be locked in an open position to hold the mouth open on one side.
