Description
Vernier Ruler
Size:12 cm
Dental Instruments
SMS vernier calliper is an instrument used to measure the internal or external diameters of an object. Vernier calipers consists of two jaws. One is a fixed jaws with main scale.it has centimeter and millimeter marks on it. The other jaws is a moveable jaw having vernier scale on it. A vernier scale has 10 divisions on it and each division is 0.9 mm.
Least Count of Vernier Scale
- The difference between one small division on main scale and one vernier scale division is 0.1 mm.
- It is called least count of the vernier calipers.
- To find the least count of vernier calipers, we used this method:
Least count of vernier callipers = Smallest reading on main scale / no. of division on vernier scale 1 mm / 10 divisions = 0.1 mm
Hence, least count = 0.1 mm  0.01 cm
Parts of a vernier calliper
- Outside jaws: used to measure external lengths
- Inside jaws: used to measure internal lengths
- Depth probe: used to measure depths
- Main scale (cm)
- Main scale( inch)
- Vernier ( cm)
- Vernier ( inch)
- Retainer: used to block moveable part to allow easy transferming a measurement
Working
The worked to be marked out with a vernier height gauge must be set vertically on a surface plate.

Measuring Instruments
A Dental Measuring instruments and gauges are used to measure various parameters such as clearance, diameter, depth, ovality, trueness, etc. These are critical engineering parameters, which describe the condition of the working machinery. Measuring instruments are used to measure physical quantities. Scientist, engineers and other human used a vast range of instrument to perform their measurements.
A dental measuring instrument provides a possibility to determine an occlusion to make a denture. An improved dental measuring instrument includes the first and second strips coupled by the connector and spring with a slid able strip comprising a horizontal portion and a scale, and wherein the first and second corbels of the slid able strip are appropriately inserted into the first and second slots of the first strip and second strip respectively
Types of measuring instruments
- Meter rule
- Measuring tape
- Vernier calipers
- Screw guage
Meter Rule
A meter rule used to measuring length of an object or distance between two points.
Measuring Tape
Measuring tapes are used to measure length in meters and centimeters.
Vernier Callipers

Screw Guage
A screw guage is an instrument used to measure small lengths such as a diameter of a wire, thickness of a sheet etc. It is also called as micrometer screw guage.
