SMS Amalgam carrier single ended hand instrument with a cylindrical hollow working tip, with a curved tip or straight tip with a different tip diameter. They have a spring action handle and may be made of stainless steel or plastic. Used to carry the mixed silver amalgam into the prepared cavity or calcium hydroxide powder to the exposure sites in pulp capping procedures. Modified amalgam carriers are available for retrograde filling after apicoectomy (hill carrier, messing carrier and dimaskieh carrier. These dental instruments are used to carry and dispense amalgam filling materials.

Amalgam Carriers

A Dental Amalgam Carriers are unique placement instruments with a sleek design. They enable the operator to transport and place amalgam while minimizing finger fatigue. Amalgam carriers is double, single and gun type ended instrument. The dentist or assistant “scoops” up the amalgam (silver filling material) and places into the opening of the tooth. Amalgam carriers is especially useful for large fillings, so that the dentist can flip it to the other end for the application of additional amalgam.

Amalgam carriers are instruments used to fill the dental cavities with amalgam. They act like syringes, carrying in their tubular tip the amalgam which is inserted and pressed in the dental cavity by pressing on the lever which activates the piston inside the tube or the back end of the amalgam carrier. It comes in different shapes and sizes, according to the place it needs to be used, for the maxilla or mandible.

Uses

  • To pack amalgam material in to the tooth preparation, amalgam carriers are used.
  • They carry the freshly prepared restorative material in to the tooth.
  • Used to carry the small masses of freshly mixed amalgam to the cavity preparation.
  • Available as lever type or plunger type carrier.
  • Have hollow working ends, called barrels, into which the amalgam is packed for transportation.
  • Carriers can be both single and double ended, barrels of amalgam carriers in a variety of sizes: small, large and jumbo
  • Lever of amalgam carriers is located on the top of the carrier. When lever is depressed, the amalgam is expelled into the preparation.
