Impression Trays

A Dental Impression Trays is usually made from plastic or metal, dental impression trays hold the impression material while the impression is being created intraorally, and then provide a firm backing to make sure the impression is free of distortions as it finishes setting. Some impression trays are designed to be reused while others essentially become a part of the impression when it is sent to the dental laboratory. Available in various sizes, trays are designed to capture a specific part of the patient’s anatomy such as a full arch, a quadrant or opposing dentition. Because different restorative situations require the use of different types of trays, it can be helpful to have a variety of tray sizes and styles on hand. Impression trays is device used to carry, confine & control the impression material from the patient’s mouth. During impression making the tray facilitate insertion & removal of impression material from the patient’s mouth. The impression trays consist of a floor and flanges. The difference between the upper and lower tray is that the upper has a palatal portion while the lower has lingual flanges. Dental impression is defined as the negative record of the tissues of the mouth. It is used to reproduce the form of the teeth and surrounding tissues.

Requirements of Impression Trays

  • The tray should be rigid and strong but not too thick and can be sterilizer and polish.
  • The tray should simulate the finished denture in size and shape.
  • The border extension of the tray should be 2mm short of the vestibular depth with no interference with muscle or frenal attachment.
  • The entire borders of the tray should be smooth, clean and rounded.
  • The tray should retain its shape throughout the impression procedure and poring of impression.
  • The handle of the tray should be angulated.
  • The tray should hold the impression material in correct position in the mouth and consequently must cover the whole areas of the jaws, which are required for the impression. They must prevent distortion of the material during setting and removal from the mouth.
